He found a way to announce that he'd been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia with his own brand of panache. It was a too long for a standard tweet, but pithy and succinct nonetheless. Statement on behalf of Turner Sports Reporter Craig Sager: "My favorite time of year – city to city, round (cont) http://t. Craig Sager announced to the world that he may never prowl the sidelines of a basketball game again, but he did it with such ease that it would have been easy to miss the pain behind his words. I don't know the man but I imagine that's exactly the way he wants it. His statement was also notable for the one person he included. He said it's too bad because he had some probing questions for Pop. Currently there are 16 coaches leading their team in the NBA Playoffs, but Sager singled out Gregg Popovich in his announcement. Sure, it's a nod to the sideshow that has become the much anticipated Popovich in-game interview, where he famously says nothing at all. And it's a nod to the back and forth that has become a fixture between the two men through the years. But it's also an acknowledgement that everything you've seen take place between these two men has been an act; something out of sync with the true character of the men taking turns speaking into the microphone between quarters. Because they have a job to do. Sager is assigned to report on the game and entertain while Popovich is there to coach his team. It has become America's favorite past time to watch the train wreck that is the interview between the two. But it's not real. Those of us that get an up-close change to observe Coach Popovich regularly would say that his actions during Game 1 of the Western Conference Playoffs on Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks were of no surprise, but to the rest of the country it must have been quite a shock. Here was the man, famous for his snarl and six second press conferences, smiling at Craig Sager Jr. before looking into the camera to deliver a heartfelt and emotional message to his the young man's father. The cold blooded, ruthless leader of this calculating, metallic, lifeless machine that is the Spurs gave you a peak on Sunday into his secret for sustained success. Put simply, the secret is to be your true self when it matters, not when it's just for show. A few months ago the 76ers were in town and Popovich was asked how Brett Brown would approach his role in Philly. He said, "he's gonna work 'em to death and then he's gonna love 'em to death." That quote always stuck with me because that's exactly how Popovich operates. The only catch is that it's a lot easier to see the work than it is to glimpse hard evidence of the love. But believe me, it's there. Just prior to the 2013 Playoffs, Pop famously cut Stephen Jackson. The fallout wasn't pretty, but it passed quickly. Why? Because Popovich and Jackson were neighbors, and they still are. When Avery Johnson comes to town, he clears his calendar for Pop and the Spurs. The family meets for dinner after the game, and Johnson spends the evening at casa Popovich. Sean Elliott is a famous former player and now does color commentary for the Spurs on Fox. He always refers to the Spurs as we and us, often drawing the ire of those who love to point out examples of homerism. But they miss the underlying theme: Elliott's words express how he still feels a part of the family. A family defined and perpetuated by the organization that's an expression of Popovich himself. Pop's treatment of Craig Sager is a shining example of his philosophy and the regard he has for a select group of professionals interacts with in his job of coaching an NBA team: He'll work you to death but he's gonna love you to death. And Craig Sager is undoubtedly part of the Popovich family. While watching Craig Sager Jr. on Sunday I saw the greatness of his father. The young man was poised and professional. It's a testament to his parents that he could step into that situation and perform so flawlessly. Interviewing Gregg Popovich on National TV isn't on the level of performing brain surgery for the first time, but I certainly saw a steady hand in the young man nonetheless. Congratulations to Craig and his father. And as an aspiring reporter, I draw strength and wisdom from men like Craig Sager. His suits are infamously spectacular, but I've watched from up close as he stalks the sidelines during NBA and NCAA basketball games, searching for the story. That's what impresses me most about him. He always gets the story. So here's to you Craig Sager. I'm praying that you recover quickly and take your place courtside again soon. Augusta mayor candidate Alvin Mason said he is against the special purpose local option sales tax because it goes against what the state law recommends for the package. Through Friday, The Augusta Chronicle will publish Q&As with the five Augusta mayoral candidates on the May 20 ballot. Answers by the candidates were edited for space. In an interview with The Augusta Chronicle, Mason spoke about his commission tenure and what it’s taught him about the inner workings of city government, including issues he says exist with Augusta’s new special purpose local option sales tax, and powers inherent in the mayor’s office. A native of Lansing, Mich., Mason started his military career in 1984 at Fort Gordon. Now a civilian in the post’s contract management office, Mason cited military experience, government work and commission experience as preparing him to be mayor of Augusta. “In the U.S. Army, this is our definition of leadership: The art or ability of influencing others in such a manner as to obtain their willing obedience in order to accomplish the mission,” he said. “I’ll tell you how important that is. When you talk about serving your country, we’ve got to communicate effectively, with real dialogue, bringing diverse groups together so we can come home and be with our families, instead of being viewed by our famlies ... across a casket or in a body bag. That’s how serious this is to me. Mason noted the recent arrivals of Costco, Cabela’s, Starbucks’ new soluble products plant and Rockwood Pigment as examples of success by the commission. ”I’m very proud in the last seven years we’ve had some of the most phenomenal growth that we’ve had in Augusta-Richmond, and I’m very, very proud of that, irrespective of the fact that sometimes there’s a perception that we’re divided. A: Yes sir I am; for several reasons. One ... is that state law says that what we’re doing right now with this particular time with the special purpose local option sales tax is not 100 percent legal... If you look at state law it says that the recommended way of putting a special purpose local option sales tax package together is to do it one year from the time of the expiration date of your current special purpose local option sales tax ... (Having said that, Mason said he doesn’t want anyone to think) “he’s against art or he’s against curing cancer or he’s against helping our local institutions bring themselves up by the bootstraps” – nothing could be further from the case. A: That’s a very good question and people (say) “You’ve got to be for it.” Well, no I don’t, because right now I’m the only one that sits in this position that is currently a commissioner of my district and I have to address the will of my district, then I’m running for a position. That means you’ve got to address the will of the entire city ... I’m caught between a rock and a hard place. Q: You’ve said as mayor you’ll be CEO and enforcer of Augusta’s codes and ordinances. A: A priority, and it goes straight to the issues we have here in the community and these derelict homes, buildings and so forth, be it downtown, Harrisburg, Summerville, Olde Town, wherever. Not enforcing the laws, getting buildings up to code and off the books, that’s been a huge Achilles heel for this community. One, we would have an assessment to make sure that people understand what their role in this government is ... So we’ve got to understand where the buck stops and who is responsible for what ... Once we’ve done that, we’re going to have weekly “come to Jesus” meetings as far as where we’re at and where we’re going. A: First and foremost, you can’t control something that you don’t have the authority to control, so I can’t control our image because that’s painted by so many external variables, to include news media, print media, neighborhood associations ... So the question becomes how do we change the perception of how we’re viewed? The reality of the situation is we’re nowhere near what we’re perceived to be ... 90 percent or more of what we pass, we pass unanimously, 10 of us ... But there are some things that cause us to take some spirited discussion in terms of agenda items. So at the end of the day I don’t control how we’re viewed. My personal belief (is) that there is a disconnect, and has been a disconnect for decades between the mayor’s office and the county commission. The county commission is your regulatory body and your governing body. The mayor’s office is, some people say, cheerleader, it’s much more than that but the mayor’s not the one that sets the policy and do those types of things ... The unique position that I find myself in, having been a county commissioner, is that I clearly understand what divides us and those things that we can agree upon. A: I’d be in favor of amending the charter. There are certain areas that to me need to be looked at ... For instance, our city administrator. I personally think it’s a problem that we have an administrator versus a city manager. An administrator by nature is there to administrate. In other words, he or she does not have hiring or firing authority over department heads and things like this. A: I believe he ought to be a city manager... Myself personally, my professional opinion as far as a mayor needing veto power and all, I don’t think you need it to be effective. I don’t, because at the end of the day, and I forget who said it, absolute authority is not really a good thing to have ... A: Here’s what I would advocate for – I would advocate for it to go on a referendum on a ballot. On a general election – not on one of these special called deals where you get special interest groups to come out and say yea or nay. But on a general election, when the majority of folks are voting and say hey, would you like to see the government structure change in Augusta-Richmond County to a strong mayor – a strong mayor is one who has a vote and/or a veto – or would you like to see it change to a management form of government, a city manager versus an administrator, and let those that are responsible for our government to decide versus one person, or 10 people on the commission, or 7-8 state representatives. Q: So at the end of the day, let’s assume you become mayor. A: I’d do an assessment of myself and say did I give my all to the job, was I as honest and forthcoming as I could possibly be, did I represent the will of the people, did I hit every communication possible, through communications and real dialogue to get people on one accord or at least to get people to agree to disagree ... Hilary Davidson puts aside her award-winning series about travel writer Lily Moore for an engrossing standalone thriller that revels in strong characters and exciting surprises. “Blood Always Tells” works well as a heartfelt, energetic story about greed, entitlement and the unbreakable bonds between siblings who never stop believing in each other. Davidson also works in a subtle but effective subtext about racial politics that gives “Blood Always Tells” an extra boost. Former model Dominique Monaghan has a plan to get back at her married boyfriend, Gary Cowan, for cheating on her with another woman. She plans to blackmail him in a way that may finally end what he has always called his “sham of a marriage” to uber-wealthy Trin Lytton-Jones. Gary has always said his marriage was arranged only because the unfeeling Trin’s father threatened to disinherit her unless she was married. But Dominique’s plan goes horribly wrong when she and Gary are kidnapped and taken to an abandoned house in rural Pennsylvania. From there, “Blood Always Tells” is a twisty route of double crosses and plot twists in which greed controls many of the characters’ souls. Home RSS SMS Mobile . 04/20/2014 09:03 PM 04/20/2014 09:05 PM 11 Nittany Lions compete at US Open/Junior Nationals LAS VEGAS - Nittany Lion wrestlers David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.) and Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) topped the list of strong performances as 15 Lions or NLWC club members competed in the 2014 Vegas ASICS/U.S. Open and FILA Junior Nationals on Friday and Saturday. Taylor and Retherford claimed runner-up laurels while Ruth took third. Taylor was superb at 74 kg, going 3-1 with a tech fall and a pin. Taylor rolled to the finals before dropping a hard-fought 7-6 decision to reigning Olympic Gold Medalist Jordan Burroughs in the finals. . Ruth was outstanding in a rugged 86 kg bracket, going 5-1 with two tech falls to place third. His only loss was a close 13-12 decision to Clayton Foster. Five other Nittany Lions also competed at the event, with all grabbing at least one win. Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah) went 3-2 at 86 kg; James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) went 2-2 at 70 kg; Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) went 1-2 at 65 kg; Kade Moss (South Jordan, Utah) went 1-2 at 65 kg; and Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.) went 1-2 at 57 kg. Retherford was equally impressive, going 5-1 overall at 66 kg in the FILA Junior Nationals bracket and taking second at 66 kg. Retherford had four tech falls before losing in the finals to Aaron Pico. Four Penn Staters competed in the Junior Nationals bracket, three of whom placed. Joining Retherford on the medal stand was freshman Garett Hammond (Chambersburg, Pa.), who went 6-3 for eighth place at 74 kg; and freshman Cody Law (Windber, Pa.), who went 5-3 for eighth place at 70 kg. He said DAP should be steadfast and tell its Pakatan Rakyat partner to call off the move, which could create disharmony in a multi-racial society. “We should not allow them (PAS) to table the Bill. We will not budge from our stand,” he said, reiterating that MCA, Gerakan, LDP and SUPP had made a joint stand against the Bill, which PAS is planning to table in June. Liow, who was in Sabah for the weekend to update MCA members on the party’s transformation programme and meet Chinese community leaders, said the hudud issue was of concern to the Chinese community. “We urge DAP to stop PAS from tabling the Bill, which is against the Federal Constitution. “DAP should be responsible to ensure that PAS does not make the country a theocratic state,” he said, adding that PAS’ move to implement hudud in Kelantan was a first step towards it. Liow said prior to last year’s general election, DAP had told the Chinese community that hudud laws would not be implemented but that they would form a welfare state. “Now it is proven that PAS’ intention is to have hudud laws in Kelantan and it is trying to push it through Parliament. He said the Federal Constitution was clear about one system of justice that allowed civil courts to decide on criminal matters. “There cannot be two judicial systems for criminal matters,” he added. Liow also met with party members at a closed-door briefing on MCA’s transformation plan. He also met with community leaders in Tawau, Sandakan and here. ANNAPOLIS — Maryland government entities have suffered at least six cyberattacks since the beginning of 2013, according to incident reports from the Department of Information Technology. The heavily-redacted reports, obtained by Capital News Service through a Maryland Public Information Act request, reveal that data-hungry hackers and scammers aren’t only going after retailers like Target and Neiman Marcus — they’re targeting state agencies. “Our government doesn’t move as quickly as the private sector ... and the private sector isn’t moving as quickly as it should be,” State Sen. Catherine Pugh (D-Baltimore) said in an interview. The report said a phishing scam that hit the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation affected “more than 100 users,” and two other incidents affected an estimated “more than 10 users. Elliot Schlanger, the state director of cybersecurity, said specific numbers of affected users are often difficult to pin down, particularly with phishing attacks. Phishing involves sending a large number of emails asking for sensitive information, like passwords, under the guise of a legitimate sender. One listed incident involved the Maryland State Police in September. Last year, the police were bombarded with thousands of gun applications ahead of incoming stricter firearm laws. To reduce the massive backlog, volunteers from the departments of Health and Mental Hygiene, Transportation, Public Safety and Correctional Services, Human Resources and Juvenile Services offered to help out with data entry, according to a police press release. According to a National Rifle Association press release, some state agencies’ computers were not adequately secured to handle gun applications, which include sensitive information. Elena Russo, director of the police’s communications department, said the incident on the Department of Information Technology report was merely a notification of a potential security risk. “It was not a security breach, it was not a cyberbreach, there were no hacks and no data brought forward by the Maryland State Police,” she said. Similarly, Maureen O’Connor, director of media relations for the Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation, said that no personnel data was stolen in a phishing attack on her department. However, a malicious program known as a “ransomware” encrypted department information, demanding that money be sent to a specific account to unlock the data. The attack began when an employee ignored a department-wide warning not to open a suspicious email. O’Connor said the malware was eliminated and the data restored within five days. The document also said that three Department of Human Resources servers were attacked on Oct. 22. Brian Schleter, director of communications for the agency, said the attack was launched on a department website used to post press releases. No data was compromised. The proposed budget for fiscal year 2014 notes that no “substantial disruptions” of state network services have occurred since 2011, when records of disruptions began. The state has taken steps to teach its employees about best practices in cybersecurity. In February, Isabel FitzGerald, secretary of the Department of Information Technology, told the House of Delegates that the department had begun monthly cybersecurity training courses for more than 40,000 state employees and contractors. “They endeavor to make sure all the employees of all the agencies are aware of the possibilities of attacks,” said O’Connor, who has taken the course. The state’s vulnerabilities aren’t new. The Office of Legislative Audits has outlined weaknesses in several agencies’ cybersecurity plans over several years. An audit of the state police from February 2009 to December 2011 found that some servers that guarded personal information, including about 176,000 Social Security numbers, were insufficiently secured. In a March 2013 response to the audit, the police insisted the auditors misunderstood a security measure, and personal information was secure. The audit also found that police networks lacked systems designed to detect intrusions. The response said that those systems were added after the audit. Similar audits found more cyber vulnerabilities in the departments of Labor, Transportation and Education as well as the State Archives. Pugh aimed to promote state cybersecurity even further during the recently-ended 2014 legislative session. She authored a bill to adopt an overarching cybersecurity plan based on a similar document published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The Senate passed the bill unanimously, but it died in the House of Delegates in committee. Pugh said the bill arose out of concerns for the state’s long-term condition, citing the growing amount of information that state entities and contractors transfer online. A 2012 hack into South Carolina records that exposed 3.6 million tax returns, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, encouraged her to make sure Maryland didn’t suffer a similar fate. “If this can occur in other states, it can occur here,” Pugh said. While the Department of Information Technology’s information security policy currently encourages following National Institute of Standards and Technology recommendations, Pugh said that her bill would have given state departments incentive to ensure they were actually following best practices. Costis Toregas, a computer science professor at The George Washington University, warned that the government reports may not tell the full story. He said that there are “probably hundreds of thousands” of attempted attacks on Maryland agencies every day that don’t get public attention. “We penalize people for coming forward and saying something bad happened ... there’s no sharing of information happening,” he said. According to state information technology policy, agencies do not need to report viruses or malware that have been automatically thwarted by anti-virus software. The Heartbleed security bug, first discovered on April 7, also may have a serious impact on government operations. The bug is a vulnerability in OpenSSL, a security protocol used to protect information on about two-thirds of all web servers, according to the technology website Ars Technica. Hackers can exploit the bug to steal passwords and other sensitive information. Toregas said even if they aren’t vulnerable to Heartbleed on their own, state agencies could still be seriously affected by it if they interact with vulnerable businesses. “We live in an interconnected world. At some point the government will come into contact with a commercial entity on the web,” Toregas said. “We've become too interconnected to draw a rigid line between commercial [and government entities]. Schlanger said after the Heartbleed outbreak, the Department of Information Technology shared strategies to deal with the bug with state information officers, some of which may have affected users. He added that the department would continue to keep tabs on potential fallout from the bug. “Continuous monitoring of the cyber threatscape is one of the fundamental tenets of our cybersecurity program,” Schlanger wrote in an email. The Department of Information Technology report also included four incidents that were not cyberattacks, in addition to the police’s risk warning. These included a stolen computer, a former employee sending an email from another’s account, and an employee’s home computer being infected with malware. What the phishers and would-be hackers were looking for in state agency computers remains a mystery. Mark Cather, director of communications and security at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said they were likely seeking employees’ personal information “because they can turn identities into cash. Hackers might also have tried to use government computers as a resource, utilizing their processing power to crunch numbers or launch further attacks, Cather said. He added that some may have sought trade secrets or other information worth selling, but it was unlikely because few state agencies make anything with patents or trademarks that would be worth selling. Regardless of their objectives, hackers aren’t going to leave state agencies alone anytime soon. Pugh hopes that legislators will take a more active role in promoting cybersecurity. “I look at the government from the perspective of a business,” Pugh said. “... The 2 car had already lost time when Andre Lotterer spun at Stowe on the damp track and then Benoit Treluyer lost it at Copse and hit the inside barrier. The Frenchman managed to get the car going, but with the front suspension and steering severely damaged only managed to drive the car straight into deep gravel from which there was no way out. Porsche dominated the GTE Pro class after rebuffing an early challenge from the lead AF Corse Ferrari.
