ADVERTISEMENTUTICA — Editors note: This is the first of several Advocate articles marking the 100th anniversary of Velvet Ice Cream. This story profiles several employees who work in production, making the ice cream that appears in freezers throughout the state. In the 15 years he’s worked at Velvet Ice Cream, Ken Harold hasn’t had to say goodbye to many of his co-workers. “There’s not much turnover here; people get going here and they stay,” he said. “The employees are a big family, and when they become a part of the family, it’s hard to separate them. People seem to get excited when Harold tells them he works as plant manger at Velvet. But many don’t realize how much it takes for a dozen employees to produce the 5 million gallons of ice cream made every year at the Utica facility. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun too,” he said. Harold started working in the dairy industry in 1975 and came to Velvet in 1999. Every day, he oversees the daily operation of the plant and works closely with his officemate Dan Dickson, who focuses on quality control and production planning. A food engineer, Dickson makes sure all the employees are following Velvet’s safety plan and procedures. It’s up to him to schedule when each flavor is made and make sure the plant has enough ingredients. Both men agreed one of the best aspects of their job is researching and developing new flavors. One of their wildest creations was the special maple bacon ice cream that was made last summer for the Ohio State Fair. “The end result always puts a smile on people’s face,” Harold said. When Brian Neighbarger began working at Velvet in 1980, the production area was much smaller and the freeze tunnel, where the ice cream is stored until it hardens, wasn’t there. The Utica man worked his way up to production supervisor and spends his days overseeing the quality of the products. “You have to make sure it’s done right. You can’t stop thinking for a second,” he said. “It’s a challenge every day. Another longtime employee, Dan Young started with Velvet 20 years ago. His main responsibility in the plant is adding flavors and inclusions such as candy, fudge or caramel, which are mixed into the ice cream. Young said he enjoys the job because every day is different. Some days, he helps with a basic flavor such as chocolate or vanilla, whereas other days, he has to add a lot of ingredients. Although things can get hectic, everyone works well together, he said. “I’ve made a few lifelong friends being here as long as I have,” he said. Jeweletta Horne and her mother Emma Miller are some of the newest employees in production. Miller has worked as a production associate for about a year and a half and recommended Horne apply for an open position six months ago. “We work as a group here, as a family,” Miller said. “If anyone needs help, someone is right there. Every day, they both inspect and package products. Horne said she likes finding out about new flavors before anyone else and working with her mom. “We get along. We have a good relationship,” she said. Miller said she appreciates working in a positive atmosphere every day. “Who wouldn’t want to do this?” she said. “We are making people smile by making them ice cream. advocate.
